Today, the top Republican on the House Financial Services Committee, Patrick McHenry (NC-10), and the top Republican on the Subcommittee on Housing, Community Development, and Insurance, French Hill (AR-02), released a statement following President Biden’s decision to extend the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) eviction moratorium.
To fix the Biden Administration’s mismanagement of the Emergency Rental Assistance programs and ensure the funds are used to pay off back rent, keeping more American families in their homes, Ranking Member McHenry led all House Financial Services Committee Republicans in
introducing the Renter Protection Act.
“President Biden’s decision to extend the CDC’s eviction moratorium is shortsighted. Congress has already provided $46.55 billion to help renters with back debts. Where has that money gone? What progress has been made? Treasury is unable to answer these questions. By extending this moratorium, which district courts have found to be unconstitutional, this Administration appears more concerned with catering to progressive activists.
“Republicans have a better idea. House Financial Services Committee Republicans recently introduced the Renter Protection Act, which will solve this problem by paying back the missed rents of households across the nation. We should be focused on common sense solutions, like our bill, to address this avoidable crisis once-and-for-all, instead of continuing to kick the can down the road.”
