Protecting Consumers

In today’s economy, Americans are struggling to make ends meet – to put gas in their car, make their mortgage payment and put food on the table. Especially in these tough times, they need to be able to make financial decisions that are best for their families and that fit their situation in life. Yet Washington has created an unaccountable new government bureaucracy called the “Consumer Financial Protection Bureau” that has the extraordinary power to take many of these decisions away from you, restrict your freedom of choice and your opportunities to obtain credit. The CFPB’s mortgage rules, for instance, are expected to prevent many credit-worthy borrowers from obtaining mortgages they want and for which they would otherwise qualify. The CFPB is also engaged in a massive data collection effort, gathering confidential financial information on millions of Americans without their knowledge or consent.

At the same time, the CFPB is adding piles of new, burdensome regulations on job creators, making it harder for them to grow their businesses, create jobs and meet the needs of their customers.

The Financial Services Committee is committed to true consumer protection. True consumer protection puts power in the hands of consumers, not Washington bureaucrats. True consumer protection holds everyone – including powerful government bureaucracies like the CFPB – accountable to consumers.

That’s why we want to hear from you. How has the CFPB affected you, your business, or your customers? Tell us your story.
