Following New Report, Committee Republicans Hold Cybersecurity Roundtable with Leading Experts
Washington,
January 12, 2021 -
Today, House Financial Services Committee Republicans, led by Republican Leader Patrick McHenry (NC-10), held a roundtable with financial services cybersecurity experts to examine the pressing issues surrounding cybersecurity and digitization of operations within the financial sector, especially in light of the COVID-19 crisis. This roundtable follows the release of a Republican Staff Report which found “the coronavirus pandemic and related relief programs created an environment ripe for cyber criminal activity in the United States and around the world.”
In 2019, Ranking Member McHenry introduced H.R. 4458, the Cybersecurity and Financial System Resilience Act, in an effort to ensure banking regulators prioritized efforts to combat cyberattacks. The bill was signed into law on December 27, 2020. Committee Republicans will continue to focus on strengthening our financial system’s cyber defenses and ensuring regulators and the entities they oversee remain a step ahead of cybercriminals and bad actors.
Today’s Roundtable gave Committee Republicans an opportunity to discuss these issues, and the report’s findings in more detail, and to solicit feedback and perspective from leading financial sector cybersecurity experts, including:
- Jay Lerner, Inspector General for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
- Fred Gibson, Deputy Inspector General for the Federal Reserve Board and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
- Chris Feeney, Executive Vice President and President of BITS, Bank Policy Institute
