Chairmen Hill, Meuser, Flood Raise Concerns with HUD About Public Housing Authorities

On the heels of Tuesday's Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee hearing on restoring trust and transparency in public housing agencies (PHAs) and Monday’s letters to 32 troubled PHAs seeking answers on living conditions and management, House Committee on Financial Services Chairman French Hill (AR-02), Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations Chairman Dan Meuser (PA-09), and Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance Chairman Mike Flood (NE-01) sent a letter to Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner.

In the letter, the Chairmen express that recent actions by HUD have provided them hope, but raise concerns about lingering unsafe and unsanitary living conditions in public housing and emphasize the importance of timely, thorough inspections and effective follow-up by HUD and PHAs. The Committee highlights HUD’s transition to the NSPIRE inspection standards, the need for accountability and transparency in inspection data, and requests detailed information on inspection practices, enforcement actions, and efforts to ensure taxpayer funds are not subsidizing unsafe housing.
